From Victim to Suspect: Man Killed Person Who Stole His Backpack, High Point Police Say

High Point Police say a man gave a couple a ride and one stole his backpack and another stole his car. He stabbed one of them more than 20 times.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point Police say a car ride went from a robbery to outright murder. They say they got a call around 10 p.m. on Wednesday from someone who said they were attacked and their car was stolen.

Here's what police say happened. Rodney Welborn met Jesse White and his girlfriend Christina Johnson Wednesday night and gave them a ride in his car. However, at the end of the ride police say White tried to steal Welborn's backpack.

That's when officers say Welborn got out of his car to confront White but Johnson jumped into the driver's seat and drove off with the car. During the confrontation, Welborn stabbed White more than 20 times, police say.

A 911 caller said White showed up at their home with "real bad" knife wounds. He died at Cone Hospital around.

Police have charged Welborn with 1st-degree murder. Johnson was charged with murder because of her alleged role in a common law robbery.

No bond was allowed for either.
