GREENSBORO, N.C. — Omega Sports will close its doors and shut down its e-commerce operation after 45 years, the company announced.
The business started in Greensboro and currently has seven locations across North Carolina including Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Wilmington and two locations in Charlotte.
Customers who frequent the store say they are shocked.
Courtney Kidwell is a mother who said she would buy sporting gear for her children and herself from Omega Sports. "This is my go-to place to get my running shoes. I know they always have them so I can either go online or pop in here and if they have my size, I can just grab it and not even try it on.”
Running ambassador, Cindy Barbour said sponsorships around town will be missed as well. "Obviously, many of them are hoping that someone else will pick up the slack. I have no idea besides letting the shock wear away then I have a feeling that the gears will be turning in plans will be put in place.”
Omega Sports sponsored several road races through Junction 311 Endurance Sports.
In an email, Junction 311 said despite the closing, all races are still on.
This decision was made after conferring with Omega's financial and legal advisors.
The company said the COVID-19 pandemic made it challenging with subsequent supply chain shortages, wage and cost inflation, and economic uncertainties that have taken a toll on the business.
"We are grateful for our incredible team of dedicated employees who have unselfishly and professionally served our customers and communities for over four decades," The company wrote in a statement sent to customers.
