Baby found safe after Amber Alert; police say father shot two people before taking son

Greensboro police said Kayson Monk and his father, Deon Monk, were both found in Harnett County early Friday morning.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police said a missing 9-month-old boy - Kayson Monk - is safe. 

Officers found the child and the father, 23-year-old Deon Monk, in Harnett County. Police said they were then turned over to the custody of an agency in Siler City. 

Police said Deon took his son Thursday after shooting two people at Claremont Apartment community on Phillips Avenue in Greensboro. An Amber Alert was issued after that. 

A 25-year-old woman - Sharelle Johnson - died from her injuries. The woman's family told WFMY News 2 she did not know Deon. 

The second person shot is a 20-year-old man. He is in the hospital, but his condition is unknown. 

Kayson is back home in Greensboro with his mother. Deon is in police custody and is being charged with: 

  • First-Degree Murder 
  • Attempted First-Degree Murder
  • Shooting into Occupied Dwelling 
  • Assault on a Female 
  • Child Endangerment 
  • Assault in the Presence of a Minor 
  • Discharge a Firearm in the City Limits
