CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill gave an all clear message to students following an alert Friday warning them about an armed and dangerous person on or near the school’s campus.

Alert Carolina sent the alert to students at 11:43 a.m.

School officials informed students to go inside and avoid windows.

Alert Carolina said the armed person was near the Ambulatory Care Center and told students to shelter in place.

Students were told they could resume normal activities after given the all clear by Friday afternoon.

Vice chancellor George Battle gave an update Friday afternoon on the alert.
Battle said UNC-Chapel Hill police were on scene by 11:34 a.m.

“Without immediate confirmation of an armed individual, but out of an abundance of caution, the Alert Carolina Emergency System was activated at 11:42 a.m., and the building was evacuated,” Battle said. “UNC-Chapel Hill police held a thorough search and reviewed security camera footage and determined that no armed person was present on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and an ‘all-clear’ Alert Carolina was issued at 12:21 p.m.”

The vice chancellor said the university actively investigated the incident in coordination with UNC Hospital police and other law enforcement agencies.

“We have carefully analyzed video surveillance and interviewed witnesses on scene in an effort to thoroughly determine whether or not anyone had a gun,” he said.
