9:00 p.m. - COVID-19 case reported at Southwestern Randolph Middle School.
Randolph County Schools sent the following:
"The Randolph County School System (RCSS) dealt with a COVID case involving exposure of individuals at Southwestern Randolph Middle School on 9/18/20. Please know that the school system worked closely on this case with Randolph County Public Health. All individuals who were exposed to the positive COVID case at the school are not permitted on RCSS campuses for 14 days and will participate in school remotely instead. Any person who has been exposed has already been notified of this exposure and told not to come to school, or will be contacted by the leaders of Randolph County Public Health through their contact tracing process. Also, a telephone message was sent to the homes of all students at the school to make parents aware of this case. In addition, all staff members at the school were notified about the case through an email. Our school system has followed all of the directives of Randolph County Public Health to ensure the safety of all students and staff members on the school's campus."

5:30 p.m. - COVID-19 cluster reported at Randolph County day care center.
The North Department of Health and Human Services reported a COVID-19 cluster at the First Church of God Dayschool. The dayschool is located on Weant Road in Archdale.
Health leaders said there's a total of six cases. That includes five staff members and 1 child.
DHHS added First Church of God Dayschool to the Covid-19 Clusters list today.
WFMY News 2 has contacted the dayschool awaiting a response.
3:30 p.m. - The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice will resume limited visitation at all the state’s prisons and in its juvenile justice facilities effective Oct. 1 with significant restrictions due to the pandemic.
Prisons
Visitation in Prisons will resume under the following temporary conditions and precautions, subject to change:
•Visits will be by appointment only and may be canceled with little notice if dictated by health and safety concerns. Visits must be arranged through the individual facility and visitors should check to ensure the scheduled visits have not been canceled prior to leaving their residence to travel to the facility.
• Visitation will not be permitted if the prison is experiencing a significant outbreak of COVID-19 or if the facility is on Red Status.
• Children under the age of 12 will not be allowed to visit at this time.
• All visitors will be medically screened with temperature checks, in addition to standard security procedures. Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19, or who has a fever of 100 degrees or more, or who has been exposed to someone who is COVID-positive, will be denied entry.
• Offenders who are in medical isolation or medical quarantine, or who have any symptoms of COVID-19, will have their visit rescheduled.
• Visitation will be limited to two visitors per session. Each offender will be allowed one visit per calendar month. Visits will be limited to 30 minutes.
• Visitation will take place outdoors, if possible and weather permitting. Physical contact will not be allowed. Offenders and visitors will be kept six feet apart and further separated by a screen if indoors. Visitation areas will be limited to 25% of capacity.
• Everyone must wear a face mask covering their nose and mouth at all times and must sanitize their hands when entering and leaving the visitation area. Masks may not have offensive language, pictures or symbols. Gaiters, bandanas and masks with a one-way valve are not permitted. Masks will be provided if needed.
• No outside food, beverages or photos will be allowed. Water will be provided for offenders and visitors.
• All visitation areas will be thoroughly sanitized between each visitation session.
•Visitors should immediately inform the facility if they receive a diagnosis of COVID-19 or develop signs and symptoms of COVID-19 within 48 hours after a visit.
Juvenile Justice
Visitation within Juvenile Justice facilities (youth development centers and state-operated juvenile detention centers) will resume under the following conditions:
• Visits must be scheduled in advance, by appointment only.
• Juveniles who are on isolation or quarantine, or who have exhibited any symptoms of COVID-19, will have their visit rescheduled.
• All visitors will be medically screened with temperature checks, in addition to standard security procedures. Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19, or who has a fever of 100 degrees or more, or who has been exposed to someone who is COVID-positive, will be denied entry.
• The visits will be non-contact only. Social distancing of at least six feet between juvenile and visitor will be enforced. Additionally, both juveniles and their visitor must wear face masks for the duration of the visit.
• If the facility grounds and weather conditions permit, visits may take place outdoors.
•Visitors should immediately inform the facility if they receive a diagnosis of COVID-19 or develop signs and symptoms of COVID-19 within 48 hours after a visit.
11 a.m. - Guilford County announces COVID-19 testing at Greensboro Coliseum this Saturday
Guilford County announced COVID-19 testing will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum this from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
“In an effort to continue to expand COVID-19 testing opportunities in Guilford County, Triad Adult and Pediatric Medicine is pleased to work with several community partners to host a drive-thru COVID-19 testing event for children and adults at the Greensboro Coliseum,” Guilford County said in a press release. “Guilford County Division of Public Health, Guilford County Emergency Management, Old North State Medical Society, United Healthcare, Cone Health, Piedmont Health Services and Sickle Cell Agency, and the Greensboro Coliseum with support from the Thomas Consulting Group, Positive Direction for Youth and Families, Inc. and Chosen Generation Connection have all worked together to sponsor this event.”
Officials said the event is a drive-thru testing event and pre-registration is available as well as onsite registration.
The county said walk-up testing will also be offered and testing for children and adults will be available. Officials said those who are planning to attend are asked to wear a face covering.
Officials said free meals will be given after testing while supplies last and voting registration will also be offered.

4:11 p.m. - Guilford County Schools announced voluntary workouts for athletics can begin on Monday, Sept. 28, for select sports.
This announcement aligns with the district’s proposed plan to gradually bring students back beginning the week of Sept. 28.
3:15 p.m. - Gov. Cooper announces kindergarten through fifth grade can return to in-person learning but will leave it up to school districts to make that decision.
If schools decide to go with that option which is considered Plan A, it will not require a limited number of students in classrooms.
"We are able to open this option because most North Carolinians have doubled down on our safety and prevention measures and stabilized our numbers. The science of lower viral spread among younger children also backs up this decision," Cooper said.
He also said, Plan A may not be right at this time for many school districts and for every family.
"Opportunities for remote learning need to be available for families who choose it. And districts will have the flexibility to select a plan based on their unique situation," Cooper said.
Masks will be required for in-person learning.
"The more people wear masks and act responsibly, the more children we can get safely in our schools," Cooper said.

10 a.m. - Christopher Ohl, M.D., an infectious disease expert with Wake Forest Baptist Health, will provide an update on COVID-19 in our region.
THE NUMBERS
- The difference between what states are doing better and which ones are doing worse is mask use
- Randolph, Guilford and Rockingham Counties are worse off than others because cases are not declining
- “As we get into COVID months, the higher your baseline is, the harder you’re going to get hit during wintertime,” Ohl said.
SCHOOLS

- Not hearing about big parities like at other schools, Wake’s outbreaks are from smaller get togethers

- “So far, so good,” Ohl said.
- Using “Plan B’
- “I think that gives a little bit of encouragement if public schools decided to bring students back for in-person learning in the future. If some of these things that private schools do are working we can keep students and staff safe in that environment," Ohl said.
- “Would I just open with no masks or distancing and no measures in place? No! If you’re going to reopen one has to pay attention to details that are going to keep our teachers, students and staff safe,” Ohl said.

VACCINE TRIALS
- AstraZeneca now back up and running, thinks it will be in the U.S. soon
- One volunteer had inflammation in the spinal cord but that was the only instance and it’s what paused the trial and was deemed unlikely related to the vaccine
- Moderna’s trial (the one at WFBH) – “we need more minorities in that study or disadvantaged people – ethnic and racial minorities because we need to make sure that trial is effective for everyone.”

FLU
- “Flu vaccines are out there now, let’s get our flu shots. We don’t want two viruses circulating at the same time. One of them you can reasonably prevent with the flu shot,” Ohl said.
- “There’s a myth that the flu shot can give you a false positive for COVID but that’s not true, it doesn’t so go get your flu shot.”
- “Every year I get the flu shot it gives me the flu, that’s just not true.”
COVID-19 VACCINE
- Not going to be widespread until next year
- Healthcare workers and high-risk groups vaccinated first
- Low-risk groups will be vaccinated down the road
- “Will a vaccine be safe and effective? Effective? We won’t know until trials are done but so far so good on the safety things. I feel strongly that until a vaccine is safe and effective it shouldn’t be rolled out until it is and I’ll be there to let you know what I think,” Ohl said.

Piedmont-Triad sees four new COVID-19 outbreaks at nearby nursing homes. The triad also saw eight outbreaks end.

- Westchester Manor on Westchester Drive in High Point. 4 total cases (all staff members), no deaths.
- Home Place of Burlington (as reported by Alamance Co. Health Dept., not DHHS). 2 total cases (1 resident, 1 staff), no deaths.

- “The health and safety of our community members remains our top priority, and our experienced professionals are working tirelessly to minimize opportunities for exposure to the virus,” said Bonnie Thompson, Executive Director of Home Place of Burlington. “These are the first cases of COVID-19 in our community and, while we continue to monitor the recovery of our resident who remains asymptomatic and under quarantine, we are pleased to report that our staff member has completed their quarantine and returned to work. 2 p.m. – NCDHHS coronavirus task force holds briefing
- NCDHHS secretary Mandy Cohen said more detailed information relating to COVID-19 data will be released later this week.
- Cohen emphasized taking safety measures recommended by health leaders to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and abiding by the three W's.
- Which means wearing a mask, washing your hands, and waiting at least six feet from another person. You also want to avoid touching your face and make sure to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and throw it away.
- Director Mike Sprayberry provided hurricane and disaster relief updates and gave tips for families to follow amid hurricane season.
- Health leaders recommended getting vaccinated for the flu.
- Cohen said case counts are more on the lower side, with percent positive around 5%.
Cohen said rallies and political events are often “higher-risk events”
“If you do want to attend political events, do it safely, do it with social distancing and do it with masks,” Cohen said.
Noon - NCDHHS releases latest COVID-19 numbers for Tuesday
North Carolina will remain in Phase 2.5 until October 2, unless Gov. Roy Cooper decided to replace the existing executive order before then.
North Carolina sees it’s fourth-straight day with percent positive at or below 5%, which is state health official’s goal in moving the state into the next phase.

6 p.m. - Alamance County sent out a press release informing the public an employee of an agency with offices within Alamance County Judicial Facilities tested positive for COVID-19 Monday.
Officials say they believe the person was last in the Alamance County Courthouse on August 28.
“As a precaution, the known locations in which this individual appeared have been cleaned and disinfected in accordance with Alamance County Health Department, CDC, and EPA protocols and guidance,” Alamance County said in a press release. “All persons who were in these facilities during this timeframe are strongly encouraged to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19.”
