There goes the sun. Days are quickly getting shorter, and it also means we're getting much closer to the fall season.

Daylight dwindles as August fades to September

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Don't look now, but our days are getting darker - fast. As August rolls along, and September approaches, our sun is setting earlier and earlier.

"This is the time of year that the days really start to get shorter," says WFMY Chief Meteorologist Tim Buckley. "If you love those long summer evenings, you'd better soak them up while we still have them."

The longest days of the year are in late June, right around the summer solstice. Since then, our days have been slowly getting darker, minute by minute. However, as we get closer to fall, they're shrinking more quickly.

At this time of year, we're losing about half an hour of daylight every week. Our days are currently over 13 hours long, but in four weeks they'll only be a little over 12 hours long.

If you love those sunsets after 8pm, you'll need to wait a long time to see them again. After our last 8pm sunset later this week the next one won't be until the end of April, 2020.
