Dad Shaming Is A Real Thing

Shaming isn't just for moms. A recent poll reveals dads are shamed too. Blanca Cobb takes a look at the reasons behind the shaming.

A recent poll reported in USA Today Shows that parental shaming isn't happening only to moms. More than one-half of the dad who were polled (52%) reported that they had been shamed. For everything from how they discipline, to playing too rough and not paying enough attention to their child among other things. A majority of the dads in the poll say the shamers were the child's other parent and grandparents.

The biggest reason for shaming is the stereotypical roles of moms and dads. Moms are typically the nurturers and the dads are typically the disciplinarians. But, what has happened is the judging comes from the shamer's perspective. So if the shamer isn't a big disciplinarian or disciplines differently then they might judge the dad's discipline as too harsh or too lenient. If the dad isn't the main caretaker of the child and the do things differently than the main caretaker then criticism can start.

Before people shame a dad, you should consider how the child is doing. If the child is happy and thriving then the dad's way of doing things is working fine. Also realize that there's more than one way to take care of a child. Babies and children are adaptable to different parenting styles just like they get used to different teachers and different teaching styles. Moms and dads parent differently and that's a great thing because kids will be interacting with different types of people.
