GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina's lawmakers have scheduled a vote to override the governor's veto on our own abortion bill on Monday. North Carolina's version is not like the heartbeat bills you've heard about in other states.
The Born- Alive Bill would allow police to lock up a doctor on felony charges if they do not provide care for an infant born after a botched abortion.
Governor Roy Cooper vetoed the bill saying in a statement: "laws already protect newborn babies, and this bill is an unnecessary interference between doctors and their patients.
The state Senate has already overridden his veto. That means the Born-Alive Bill would become state law if three-fifths of the house votes for it Monday.
But, and this is a big but, Republican leaders have already rescheduled this vote six times. Political insiders say that's to make sure they have enough support. So we'll see what happens.
