Parents Exposing Their Kids' Privacy On Social Media

Not protecting your kids' privacy on social media can be dangerous for them and damaging to your relationship with them as well.

Parents are proud of their kids. So why is it a problem to share photos of their kids on social media? As a parent, you lose control of who sees the photos and videos as well as how they're used. People can screenshot the photos and post on other sites that you don't know anything about. There's a recent case that I read where a nanny swiped photos of the baby she was taking care of. The nanny posted photos of the baby as though she was her own child to raise money for herself.

Your children should have a say about what's posted about them. If they don't want their faces, identity or activities posted then you should respect their wishes. If you don't then your child may lose trust in you. If they do then they're less likely to talk to you. They might start to withdraw from you or become argumentative.

If you've already overshared against your kid's wishes then you can make amends. Apologize to your child. Let them know that moving forward, you'll ask their permission. Let them know how you're going to use/post the photos/videos and what's going to be said about the photo.
