American Red Cross Volunteers Deploy to Help Flood Victims In Midwest

10 volunteers will head to Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. The Red Cross is also deploying two of the region's emergency response vehicles to assist with providing feeding and delivering supplies.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Western North Carolina American Red Cross is sending volunteers to the Midwest to help flood victims.

10 volunteers will head to Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. Two of them leave Thursday morning.

The Red Cross is also deploying two of the region's emergency response vehicles to assist with providing feeding and delivering supplies.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by this flooding, and our thanks go out to our volunteers who are responding to the call to assist," said Angela A. Broome Powley, Regional CEO for the Western North Carolina Red Cross. "We are so thankful for the commitment and passion of our volunteers to help alleviate suffering in times of emergencies. The Red Cross could not do what we do without them."

Red Cross volunteers will help provide shelter, food, and relief supplies to those in need.

Shelters are already open in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio.

Red Cross workers have provided nearly 1,000 overnight shelter stays as of Tuesday night.

As many as 160 people sought refuge in 12 shelters across the five states.

Several rivers are at flood stage and more rain is forecast for the Mississippi and Tennessee river valleys through this week.

Some regions may see an additional five inches of rain.

For that reason, the Red Cross has extra volunteers standing ready to respond as needed.
