Cops: N.Y. student arrested for beating up principal

A New York teenager was arrested Monday after authorities say he punched his high school principal, according to local reports.

Luis Penzo, 18, a student at Manhattan Early College for Advertising, was arrested on assault charges Tuesday, CBS2 reports.

According to police, Principal Matthew Tossman asked Penzo to turn down the volume on his headphones, but Penzo refused. The student then punched Tossman, CBS2 reported.

The NYC Department of Education said in a statement that Tossman did not try to take the headphones from Penzo prior to the attack.

“As the NYPD complaint report states, the principal was attempting to pick up the headphones from the ground, not take them from the student," the NYC Department of Education said in a statement. "Before the attack,‎ there was no physical contact between the principal and the student.”

Tossman was treated for swelling at a local hospital and later released, NY1 reported.

Penzo’s attorney asked the judge to be lenient with Penzo, whose mother recently passed away.

He is currently being held on $5000 bail.
