Gabby Douglas misses VMAs, tweets love while recovering from infection

The Final Five were down one gold medalist at the MTV VMAs.

Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez and Simone Biles hit the white carpet to celebrate their Olympic win in style.

Unfortunately, the girls' outing had one missing element. Gabby Douglas shocked fans when she tweeted a picture of herself recovering in bed instead of posing on the carpet with her teammates.

"Out of the hospital and resting comfortably!" she tweeted. "Final Five so sad I can't be with you all to present tonight MTV thank you xoxo." 

Douglas is in the hospital undergoing treatment for an infected past mouth injury. According to her publicist Lesley Burbridge, she continues to have swelling and adverse reactions to medications.

Her teammates gave her a big shoutout, however, before presenting the award for best female video to Beyonce.

"The five women nominated for best female video are role models to us and we hope to be the same to a younger generation of women," Raisman said.

"And we love them all," Hernandez added.

The women, who coordinated in cocktail dresses from Dream Dresses (Hernandez), Hayley Paige (Raisman) and Sherri Hill (Biles), fan girled out with Beyonce as well as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Ariana Grande.
